By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer’s best of weather
And autumn’s best of cheer.

Helen Hunt Jackson - September
The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze.

John Updike, September

It was midsummer just a couple of days ago. I don't think it was celebrated particularly here, but yesterday I met some Norwegians who reminded me how it is a big deal in Scandinavia. Did you celebrate the longest day in any way?

Summertime for me is, also read a book in our rose garden, where we only hear the noise of insects and birds, except on the moments when the grandchildren play in the garden.

@jackelliot I like puffins very much. Once I saw them on their breeding ground in Iceland.
  • mheredgemheredge Teacher Here and therePosts: 26,992 mod
I saw puffins swimming in the sea off the coast of Scotland, near Edinburgh @Paulette. But best of all I remember Puffin books (the child of Penguin books) when I was a child. The symbol on the books published by this company are very cute.

@Paulette the puffins of iceland and Scotland had a cods war in the 1970's

@mheredge ladybird, puffin books are wonderful way to learn English from

Ha ha ha I think the puffins were united in their disapproval of those stupid humans @jackelliot.

We have a lot to answer for. I read today that the very last white Rhino had not been able to breed and therefore they will soon be no more.

@amatsuscribbler where did this propagation fail?
I read in our paper last month that scientists hope to fertilize the females with in vitro fertilization (IVF) artificially. A difficult and expensive business, but it is the last chance to save the species. If the scientists succeed in their intentions, it will be the first time that a rhinoceros reproduce artificially.
This was in the Kenyan Game Reserve.

But why this bird is oftenly poisoned by estate owners. Is that a dangerous bird for humans or kids?

They should be prosecuted if they're killing endangered species @jackelliot. What's going on?

    A Summer Adventurous day

    http://jackelliot.over-blog.com/2017/07/scorpion.html

The water stick-insect and the water-scorpion usuallly live in the mud in shallow water, where they can from time to time reach up their long tails and push them through the water.

Their tails are siphons through which they can breathe.

They, like the beetles and wotar-boatmen are carnivorous.

Something lovely to see at the bottom of your garden

In the pond as you saunter the Summer day prettily

My summer environment is totally different from yours @jackelliot. It's urban and busy with hardly any nature at all, but I enjoy it a lot too.

You're right @jackelliot. City bees would probably agree with you as many of them tend to flee the fields for the city.

The summer environment is very different on each places. In my area you can enjoy the sun at the beach of the North Sea or you can take a walk in the shadow of the forests.
  • jackelliotjackelliot Posts: 737 OTT
@Paulette I remember a Summer in Danzig where there are forests beside the beaches on the Baltic. delight in seeing red squirrels
