"Still lie the sheltering snows, undimmed and white;
And reigns the winter's pregnant silence still;
No sign of spring, save that the catkins fill,
And willow stems grow daily red and bright.
These are days when ancients held a rite
Of expiation for the old year's ill,
And prayer to purify the new year's will."

    Both are correct, but the tone is different. The first sounds more direct and final, as if it were spoken by someone from the military, or a history professor. The second sounds more conversational, as if it were spoken by you or I during a normal conversation over a cup of coffee, or by someone not involved in the war who was explaining the contract to both of us.
