There is wind where the rose was,
Cold rain where sweet grass was,
And clouds like sheep
Stream o'er the steep
Grey skies where the lark was.

Nought warm where your hand was,
Nought gold where your hair was,
But phantom, forlorn,
Beneath the thorn,
Your ghost where your face was.

Cold wind where your voice was,
Tears, tears where my heart was,
And ever with me,
Child, ever with me,
Silence where hope was.

Songs can evoke vivid memories.

What 10 songs sum up 2016 for you?

Try writing why you feel they have a connection with last year.

Just to clarify - it's up to you if you want to include a YouTube video.

Actually this one's been around 58 years I think (before I was born any way), but it one of my favourites.

Though it was a hit years before I was even around @aladdin, Simon and Garfunkel bring back happy memories as their Bridge Over Troubled Waters was the first LG I ever bought.

It's not easy to narrow down to the list of the top 10 songs since there are so many good songs played in EG.

This is 2016 for me, summed up in ten songs.

    1. 2016 started excitingly with a phenomenon Total Solar Eclipse in Indonesia, which I was one of the millions witnesses.
This fabulous eclipse was evidence of how wonderful this world is.
My first song is therefore: “What a wonderful world”.

    2. It was so nice to watch the sun played hide and seek with the moon, so my second song is:
    “Here comes the sun”.

    3. Unfortunately, the news about the terrorist attack in Brussels Airport Belgium in March the 22nd, changed my happy mood rapidly.
The attack in Brussels followed by Nice in July and Berlin in December.
The title of my third song is: “Ticket to heaven”, the quote that is frequently used by suicide bombers, but the lyrics are not about killing of course.

    4. My fourth song is “Same as it ever was” from Michael Franti & Spearhead.
He wrote this song as a cry for justice after a lot of violence and injustice which happened in US and many other countries.

    5. The Summer Olympic 2016 took place in Brasil in August.
So, “Brazil” from Bellini is my fifth song.

    6. Floods, earthquakes, forest fires and hurricanes were in the news the whole year caused by, among others, global warming.
What have we done with our beautiful world?
The “Earth Song” is from Michael Jackson.

    7. Sadly, one and another death announcement reached us.
David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, George Michael Toots Thielemans, Fidel Castro, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, Andrew sachs .....
    "Time to say goodbye":

    8. This song, one of the favourite songs in English Radio is dedicated for Cohen: “Halleluyah".

    9. In November, Bob Dylan is awarded The Nobel Prize for Literature, with a lot of controversy though.
"We Shall Overcome" is a protest song in the 20th century that became a key anthem of the African-American Civil Rights movement.
Dylan covered also this song and I want to add this song as my ninth for him and also because my mind goes to thousands of migrants who had lived in Calais Jungle for months, waiting for a chance to reach UK, but eventually they were evacuated from this place in October 2016.
This song is also my way to stay positive after witnessing a lot of disappointments in 2016 like The Brexit and the fact that Donald Trump is elected as the new American President.

    10. Finally, as my tenth, I chose “We are the world”.
Let us stay together for the good sake because we are the world! We have to make the world a better place for everyone!

I enjoyed the song "History" by 'One Direction' this year. I know they're a band for teenagers really, but I have a friend and it's 'our song' which just makes it even more special!

The most of chosen songs are old and sentimental, not from 2016. Are we getting older and don't like new kind of music? :D
