There is wind where the rose was,
Cold rain where sweet grass was,
And clouds like sheep
Stream o'er the steep
Grey skies where the lark was.

Nought warm where your hand was,
Nought gold where your hair was,
But phantom, forlorn,
Beneath the thorn,
Your ghost where your face was.

Cold wind where your voice was,
Tears, tears where my heart was,
And ever with me,
Child, ever with me,
Silence where hope was.

It depends on how how much of one colour or the other you use. So, it goes like:-

    1.beige or tan.
    2. Grey
    3. Most likely an ocher colour; if you add more yellow, you'll definitely get a golden brown, and brown is dark yellow.
    4. Add a little brown to some white, rather than white to some brown. If this doesn't give you a cream you like, try adding a tiny bit of yellow and/or red (or orange) to warm up the mixture.
    5. red
    6. Equal parts red and violet make maroon.
    7. black
    8. blue

@gomaa Maroon is brownish red, which takes its name from the French word marron, or chestnut.

So I think blue is not the right answer to question 6. You easily get maroon by mixing red with a slight touch of brown.

imageRed and blue make purple. Of course it depends on the mixing ratio. Sometimes maroon is depicted as purplish, like you can see in the picture on the left side, but that is not quite what maroon is supposed to be. It's supposed to be chestnutish.

I've seen it @gomaa. Maybe there are more possible answers. It certainly depends on the amount of blue you add. If you add to much blue, it will become purple. To get brown you have to mix red and green. And to get green you have to mix blue and yellow. So I would say that for maroon you need red, blue and a tiny bit of yellow. Or, if you want to get it out of two colors, I would say: brown and red.

Did you know that over 200 years ago, there was no universally recognised system to identify colours. In 1962, an artist know as Boogert, created an impressive piece of literature about mixing colours.

Handwritten in Dutch, the “Traité des couleurs servant à la peinture à l’eau“ is an 800-page long guide on colour and paint, and was probably the most comprehensive guide to colours at the time. It featured colour samples, descriptions and even instructions on how to create certain hues and change the tone by adding one, two, or three parts of water.

I'm sure many people in the old days were fascinated by the secret of colors. Not only artists but also scientists. In the almost same period as the artist lived, Newton was one who significantly contributed to the study of colors. He experimented with prisms, and discover that colors only come from light, rather than the mixture of light and darkness. Also the seven colors to discribe rainbow is what he coined.
