"Still lie the sheltering snows, undimmed and white;
And reigns the winter's pregnant silence still;
No sign of spring, save that the catkins fill,
And willow stems grow daily red and bright.
These are days when ancients held a rite
Of expiation for the old year's ill,
And prayer to purify the new year's will."

Do you use libraries?

GemmaRowlandsGemmaRowlands ModeratorPosts: 3,868 mod
I think that libraries are wonderful places, and enable you to get hold of books instead of having to buy them in the shops. I have been a member of our local library since I was a child, and I enjoy going in there regularly. There are lots of places for me to sit in there, meaning that I am able to do my work whilst having the books there to reference from.

Do you like to use your local library?

@GemmaRowlands libraries are so helpful , but I would like to have a private library
Always it's so hard for me to study in our home because there is so noisy
    So I hope a private library ;)

I joined my local library in Nice last week. It's in a beautiful restored station building and it's all brand new (the library moved in from across the road ). They have wifi and computers but just limited to an hour per day, but you can take out up to 18 items including DAD'S, CDG, books and articles. It's a very nice work environment and I expect I'll use it quite a bit when I'm in town.

It is great that you have just joined at your local library, and it sounds as though there is everything that you need there to keep you occupied, which is a good thing. My local library is only small, so I have to walk into town if I want anything specific or specialised from there, but it is still quite close so it doesn't really bother me that I have to do it.

No really. I simply buy a book and keep it in my own small library. But, library is always my favourite place because it has very subtle ambiance.

I'm hoping it will encourage me to read in French @GemmaRowlands. I didn't see any books in English, but I didn't look very hard.

I am off to the library later with my two young grandchildren. They absolutely love it there and we have to read all the books they choose while we're there too!
  • GemmaRowlandsGemmaRowlands Moderator Posts: 3,868 mod
I think that it is fantastic that you take your children to the library @amatsuscribbler because it is a great way to make sure that children learn to enjoy books, and appreciate reading them in the future. I am sure that they will enjoy reading the books with you.

Yes, I would love to go to library and read books. I spent a lot of time in libraries while I was at college & university. I used to go to library when it open and and come back when it closes.
  • GemmaRowlandsGemmaRowlands Moderator Posts: 3,868 mod
So you like to spend the whole of your day reading books @nmm ? I wish that I was able to do that, as it sounds like a wonderful way to spend the day. But unfortunately I don't have as much time as I would like to read books anymore, which is a shame really.

There's a beautiful library near home. I would love to spend time there though I don't have enough time lately. :(

@GemmaRowlands what kind of books, do you like to read?
  • GemmaRowlandsGemmaRowlands Moderator Posts: 3,868 mod
It depends on what type of mood I'm in @bubbly . When I want to relax I will read romance books, or when I want something a little more exciting I will reach for a thriller instead. I just love reading new books, it makes me very happy indeed.

@GemmaRowlands I try to develop my reading habit again but I lose my concentration after sometime and stop reading.
  • GemmaRowlandsGemmaRowlands Moderator Posts: 3,868 mod
Yes I often struggle to find the concentration to read for any length of time, too. Particularly when I know I have work to do, which is most of the time, and I can't relax and read until everything is done. So really, the only time I am able to relax is at the weekend.

I try to get into a habit of reading 20 minutes before going to sleep. Otherwise unless I'm on holiday, I don't usually have time any other time.
  • GemmaRowlandsGemmaRowlands Moderator Posts: 3,868 mod
Yes, I like to read before I go to bed, and it is good to help you sleep as well as it can help you to relax. It is a much better activity than it would be to look at the screen of a phone before sleeping.

The only thing is that I sometimes find myself waking up a few hours later, lights all blazing and the book fallen out of my hand!

I really like books and they have had an important part in whole of my life.I have been being a big fan of books since I was a child and I think my father has a big influence in it.I like to read books that are mine but because of financial things and environmental problems(cutting trees down) that buying them can cause I borrow some books from libraries.Although,I prefer to buy them.
  • GemmaRowlandsGemmaRowlands Moderator Posts: 3,868 mod
I know what you mean about thinking about the environment, but I also love the feeling of a new book that nobody has ever touched, so sometimes I will admit that I am very selfish about it, and enjoy buying a book for myself, too.

Hay-on-Wye is a lovely village with the bonus of having this amazing public library.

@mheredge beautiful. There are bookstalls on the footpath in my city every Sunday where people can get some good books at a reasonable price.

I was a member of my school library but now I am not fond of going library.I think in these day I am so away from books.

    I like libraries,but now I don't use them now.
Last year I used my school library, but it's not good, there're very old books and in bad condition.
  • mheredgemheredge Wordsmith Here and therePosts: 24,052 mod
I found Bogota impressive by its number of bookshops and libraries @Bubbly.
  • BubblyBubbly Nightingale Posts: 29,808 ✭✭✭✭✭✭
@mheredge they are blessed then. There are few libraries in my city but people don't use them as there is a trend of either ebooks or getting low priced paper books from the stalls.

That looks great, and it is wonderful to know that no matter where you are in the world, books will be able to make their way to you somehow!

I need to check the opening hours of my local library. It's in such a cool building too.
