"Still lie the sheltering snows, undimmed and white;
And reigns the winter's pregnant silence still;
No sign of spring, save that the catkins fill,
And willow stems grow daily red and bright.
These are days when ancients held a rite
Of expiation for the old year's ill,
And prayer to purify the new year's will."

    I am getting irritated by too hot weather. No solution to come out of it.
  • mheredgemheredge Wordsmith Here and therePosts: 24,139 mod
    It didn't quite get to 30 degrees, but all the same people seemed to be suffering the heat. I think I must be used to it as it was very pleasant as far as I was concerned. But then again, I didn't have to rush anywhere. I get quite irritable when it's too hot too @bubbli. The only solution is to eat ice cream!
  • aprilapril Moderator Posts: 9,785 mod
    Yes, the temperature here is not even 30°, but the heat is accumulated in the house which makes that it feels hotter than it is.

    Well, I was in Iraq many years ago. Life flourished around midnight. :) I remember children eating ice creams. :)

    @Bubbli, yes and no because she couldn't take me there for two years. She worked in a camp near refinery in Baiji.

    @Xanthippe it reminds me of the movie "The Hurt Locker". Did you watch it?
    How was you experience of Iraq? It is totally devastated now because of political tussles. :(
  • XanthippeXanthippe Posts: 1,696 ✭✭✭✭✭
    No, @Bubbli, I haven't watched it.
    At the time, there was a war with Iran but we stayed far from dangerous zones.

    People were very friendly and adored haggling. We were invited to Arabic houses several times. :) I had mixed feelings about food. Sweet chickens for example. :)

    I remember a house in Samarra. Our host showed us his sister's room fitted with a modern recorder. I guess she might have liked Western music. I also saw her black cloak thrown negligently, probably in a hurry. He said that she had gone to Baghdad to disco since Samarra was too conservative.

    My problem was that I didn't speak either English or Arabic so my experiences were superficial. Besides, you weren't allowed to travel freely. My mum was able to organise some trips though, e.g. to Nineveh.
